So we left Detroit and spent 15 hours on a lovely Boeing 777-200. We sat on the ground to be de-iced and left about 2 hours late. By this point though I figured I had made it on the last plane, so who cares. I slept from takeoff until dinner time, and then watched three movies. The plane had monitors in the back of every headrest which was awesome! After some more sleeping and tv watching, I got to see the glow of Hong Kong as we landed. It was amazing, and made me finally start to realize how major of a journey I was taking.
We landed about 9:05pm and had to go through customs, collect baggage and check-in to the hotel. Since the flight got in so late, I didn't feel like trying to get to Macao that night. I was glad I had chosen to stay at the airport hotel. It is a little expensive, but to be able to go straight up to a nice room, take a hot shower, and crawl into a comfy bed was wonderful. Jatana and I grabbed dinner at a little Chinese fastfood place in the airport. We both had the beef brisket with wonton and noodles in soup. It was pretty good.
The next morning we got up and ended up at Burger King for breakfast. The price was right, and it tasted just like home. One thing we did notice was that their small, medium and large sizes were much much smaller than ours. Their large is our medium.
After breakfast we decided to go ahead and go to the ferry station. We took the MTR to Hong Kong, which was very easy, and then took a taxi to the ferry. We asked about how to get to the ferry station at the train station and they laughed at us because we thought we had seen that we could take the train straight to the ferry. Apparently we were wrong and we could have actually walked to the ferry from the MTR if we felt like it. haha yeah right. We would have been so lost.
So, made it to the ferry station, and thank goodness we left early. Jatana hadn't purchased her ticket yet and the earliest one she could get was 2:15. Mine was for 2:05pm. We hung around the ferry station and learned how to hover in order to get a table to sit at.
The staff at the ferry station took pity on us and put us both on the 2pm. yay! The ride was nice about an hour long and the rocking motion made for a nice nap. Though if you're prone to motion sickness watch out. Once we docked in Macao we had to stand in line to go through customs one more time! After we met Gigi who is a second year IFT student. She was extremely nice and took us to our apartment. Low and behold the school placed us together! There are two rooms in our apartment, but no one has moved into the second room so far.
It was definitely nice to finally unpack and settle into our home for the next four months!
Signing off. Next time more about our lovely little home and our first days in Macao!
